Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the ICON Trailer Coupler Lock for Flat Lip 2-5/16" Ball Coupler

Hello, neighbor, Steve here with etrailer.com. Folks, today we're looking together at this ICON trailer coupler lock for your flat lip 2 5/16 inch ball couplers. Folks starting off here, the guy here weighs 22 pounds of heavy duty hardened steel. So it's gonna be a visual deterrent, number one. It's gonna lock down your trailer's coupler to deter tow away theft, and also keep others from hooking up to your trailer. If fit's over Curt, Demco, and Fulton ball style couplers with flat lips, and it is constructed of a durable, long lasting materials.

Once again, it's all hardened cast steel. The radius fence here go out and around it, so someone would have to cut for a long, long time through hardened steel, which is really hard to get to it. And then you got the centerpiece. The whole locking mechanism is stainless steel. So how do you use it Well, you simply twist off the cap here.

That's a solid stainless steel construction there. It's got the O-ring there, that's gonna keep moisture, dirt and debris out of the lock cylinder itself. They give you four keys. It's a half circle kind of design and it's only cut on one side. That's gonna make it harder to pick this lock and also to get a duplicate would be more difficult as well.

But you get four keys so you shouldn't have to worry about that. Simply twist it to lock. Now you can pull up or down to lock the coupler as needed. Once you get it locked, screw the top cap back on and you are ready to go. Now the overall diameter is gonna be 7 5/8 inches, and it does have a nice limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer.

Now it has a nice e-coat underneath this powder coat, and that powder coat's gonna give you extra durability and resist chipping, scratching, wear and tear, those kind of things. From metal on metal contact when you're hooking it up, taking it off, those kind of things. The cap here covering, it's gonna help keep it from freezing up, gunked up, all those kind of things. Again, that O-ring is gonna prevent moisture from getting in there and it's just gonna be a super simple, easy lock and unlock design. Well folks that's gonna wrap it up. A nice robust ICON trailer coupler lock, again for the flat lip 2 5/16 inch ball couplers. I'm Steven, thanks for watching.

Very heavy duty, I've seen videos of testing this lock and nobody is getting through this thing.

If you’ve got a boat trailer with a Titan or Dexter flat-lip 2-5/16-inch coupler, you already know the trailer is what makes it easy for someone to take off with your boat. In fact, about three out of four stolen boats are taken from the owner’s driveway or yard at night. That’s why I was impressed by the ICON AL63DQ coupler lock. It’s a heavy 22-pound chunk of cast steel with fins that make it tough for saws or grinders to get anywhere, and the special half-moon key keeps it from being picked like the cheaper locks out there. I like that the stainless cap seals out water and grit, because most boat trailers spend a lot of their time outdoors. This is a good option for the boaters out there with a Dexter or Titan flat lip coupler.

I’ll admit I was skeptical when Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop because I've seen plenty of beefy looking coupler locks be taken off with an angle grinder. After watching them actually go at it with power tools, I came away pretty impressed. The design uses thick steel, so even if you start grinding, you’re just chewing through layers. They also built the lock face to spin if someone tries drilling, which just eats up the bit instead of the lock. On top of that, the keys are unique enough that there won't be duplicates just floating around. The stainless body and weather-sealed cap mean it holds up outside, which is huge for trailers that sit in lots or barns for months at a time. To me, it feels like a real step above the typical coupler lock — and considering what you’ve got riding on your trailer, this is one of those cases where a tougher lock is worth it.

I’ve tested a lot of trailer locks over the years and most of them fold once an angle grinder hits. When Altor brought their ICON lock into the shop, I figured it would be more of the same. They cut straight through a well-known coupler lock during their demo here, and you can see that in my video. Then they put the ICON to the grinder, and it barely scratched it. The thick cast steel with its fin design makes it incredibly hard to get down to the core, and the lock face spins against a drill bit so it just ruins the bit. The keys are built in a way that keeps them from being copied at the hardware store, and the stainless body with a sealed cap keeps the lock working even after sitting outside. I also like how these locks are made to fit specific couplers, so take a look at your trailer and make sure you get the right match. After seeing it in action, I can say it’s a huge step up in trailer security.

It’s easy to look at a trailer lock and assume it’s secure, but I’ve seen how fast an angle grinder can take most of them off. So when Altor showed up with the ICON lock, I wanted to see it put to the test. They cut through a very common coupler lock here in our shop during the demo, and you can watch that in my video. Then they put the grinder on the ICON, and it just wouldn’t give in. The heavy cast steel with its fins forces the blade to fight through layers, and the lock face itself spins when you try to drill it. That means the tool wears down instead of the lock. The key system is also designed so it cannot be copied at your local hardware store, which is another layer of security. The body is stainless, the cap seals out the weather, and it’s built to last outside. What stood out to me too is that ICON makes these to fit specific couplers. So be sure to check your trailer style before you order, because getting the right fit makes the lock even harder to defeat. From what I’ve seen, this is one of the toughest options out there.

For me, what stands out about this heavy duty trailer lock is how practical it feels when you are actually using it on a flat lip coupler. I think it is a smart option for campers and larger trailers because it combines security with a process that is straightforward enough to use every day. The hardened steel body with those fins is what makes it a power tool resistant lock, and in real cut tests I have seen it hold strong where basic locks fail. I like that the key system is different from standard ones since that makes it harder for anyone to pick or duplicate, and you still get four keys so you are covered. What matters most is that once it is on your Demco, Curt, or Fulton coupler, it gives the impression that the trailer is locked down for good, which is a big part of why it works

When you put this heavy duty trailer lock on a flat lip 2 5/16 inch coupler it gives instant peace of mind because you know no one is casually hooking up to your trailer. At 22 pounds of hardened cast steel, I saw first hand in a demo while Altor was here at etrailer, that the fins make it about as close to an uncuttable trailer lock as you will find, and that makes it a true power tool resistant lock. I like how the disc detainer stainless steel core and half circle keys make it tough to pick or copy, which adds security well beyond a standard pin style lock. I think the way Altor built this with an O ring seal and a combination of e coat and powder coat really shows how much thought went into making it a weather resistant coupler lock that can handle rain, snow, and freezing conditions without seizing up. It installs in seconds, just twist off the stainless cap, slide it over the coupler, lock it, and replace the cap. This is best for anyone who wants proven protection on higher value trailers, although it may feel like more than you need if you only store a smaller utility trailer.

Pricey, but amazingly solid and appears to be impenetrable!

  • Best Coupler Lock For 2-5/16" Ball That Cannot Be Easily Defeated
Hello Jacob, thanks for reaching out. There are a lot of different locks that can work with the Demco Ez-latch coupler. To be honest, any lock can be defeated, it is just a matter of how difficult the lock would be to defeat. A really good all-around coupler lock is the BulletProof Hitches Extreme Duty Coupler Lock # BPH96VR. This uses an extra thick 1" shackle which is going to be harder to defeat compared to other locks of the style. These can work well as a theft deterrent and would...
